What size sign should I get?

If you’re a small business owner, a realtor, an auctioneer, or just looking for a way to advertise your garage sale, chances are – you’ll need a sign. Clueless on what size sign best suits your needs? Have no fear – 1-800-The-Sign has 25+ years of experience in that field, and we’re here to break it down for you.
Large Signs: 4’x8′ and 4’x4′
Best for: Commercial real estate agents, builders, new construction, commercial for lease, large lots, restaurants.
Longevity: 6 months – 2 years
Installation: Intermediate (unless you use our patented Post Pocket technology, in which case you can do it in a dress and heels easily!)
It’s true that the larger the thing you’re advertising is, the larger the sign should be. If you’re selling a huge lot or an apartment complex, you want to make a big statement. This especially goes for new construction! If there’s a new building coming to town or if you’re a commercial realtor putting a new building up for sale, you want to be sure to get a sign that will get your message across as quickly as possible – to the most people as possible.
Installation for signs of this size can be pretty daunting – they tend to get on the sweaty, elbow-grease-needed side. On the bright side, there’s no way anyone will walk by and steal a sign of this size!
They usually require ground installation through a post hole digger or a shovel, and are meant to stand for quite a while – usually about 6 months to 2 years or more.
If you’re looking for a large sign with easy installation, we recommend our 4×4 sign with our patented Post Pocket technology! You can see how easy it is to install here!
Here are some examples of 4×8 and 4×4 signs for you to visualize!
Mid-size Signs: 3’x4′ and 2’x4′
Best for: Auctioneers, residential real estate agents, school carnivals, small businesses, coming soon.
Longevity: 6-12 months
Installation: Easy
Slightly smaller than those huge commercial signs listed above, but bigger than small signs, 3’x4′ and 2’x4′ signs are exactly that – mid-size. The 3’x4′ signs are extremely popular with auctioneers in particular – in fact, we lovingly nicknamed our 3×4 signs the Bidder Getter!
These signs are great for big announcements, especially “Coming Soon!” They’re small and lightweight enough that that can be installed anywhere, but large enough to include enough information to get your message across. For temporary signs, they really do make a lasting impression. The print on our signs is guaranteed to last at least 2 years outdoors without fading, and our Skirt Stand, our installation method for these signs, can actually take a significant amount of wind without bending or falling over!
Make no mistake, these are definitely temporary signs, but we make it so they’ll endure – because we know sometimes things happen, and “Coming Soon,” might not end up being so “soon”.
Small Signs: 2’x2′, 32″x24″, 18″x24″
Best for: political campaigns, residential real estate agents, garage sales, open houses, personal things like birthdays and graduations, directing traffic, schools, apartments
Longevity: 2 weeks – 6 months
Installation: easy peasy lemon squeezy
Sometimes referred to “directionals” or “bandit signs“, smaller signs such as these are your run-of-the-mill yard signs you can stick in the ground in one second and be done with it. They’re usually printed on both sides, usually 4mm (1/4”) thick corrugated plastic, and stuck in the ground in front of someone’s house, in front of an election site, or even stuck in the middle of the grassy median in the street.
These signs are super easy to put in using a metal wire stand you can just step in the ground… but they’re also super easy to take out, so unfortunately, they’re prone to being stolen (especially if they’re political). If you’re going with these small signs, we recommend you get multiple at a time for replacements. You’re in luck – we offer bulk discounts on all our signage.
Fortunately, we offer another installation method for these signs that’s a little more helpful in the longevity department – our Yard Arm Post. That’s that L-shaped post thing all residential realtors have stuck in the front lawn of houses, also called a colonial post. All 3 of these sign sizes are compatible with ours, so you don’t have to feel limited on space to put all the information you need to.
Just remember, before you install, make sure to give your city a call. Each city has rules and regulations on how big a sign you’re allowed to have, so make sure you’re in the clear before you pull out your wallet!
