Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about 4'x4' Restaurant Signs.

Shipping & Delivery

How fast we ship, carriers, transit time, and shipping costs.

What carrier do you use for shipping?

FedEx Ground is our standard shipping method. FedEx Priority Overnight and 2 Day Air are available upon request.

How long will it take to reach me after it ships?

Typically 1–3 business days, depending on your location. Orders ship from Florida, Ohio, and California.

How do you ship a sign that size?

Signs are scored, folded, and shipped in a 2‘×4‘ box. The scoring is done against the corrugations, so it does not affect rigidity.

Will I see a proof before printing?

Size, Design & Artwork Guidelines

What you can include, photo/map charges, and changing information later.

What are the standard dimensions of a 4‘×4‘ sign?

A 4‘×4‘ sign is 4 feet tall by 4 feet wide (48" × 48").

What can I put on the sign?

Anything you like. Your company logo, layout, and design work are included. Photos, maps, and renderings can be added for an additional charge.

Is there a setup fee?

No. Layout and design are included in the price of the sign.

Why is there a "safe area" for artwork on my sign?

When a 4‘×4‘ sign is mounted using a post kit, part of the sign is held in place by frame tracks and posts. To ensure that your important text, logos, and graphics are not covered by the post kit hardware, we recommend keeping all critical design elements within a designated safe area.

What is the recommended safe area for my artwork?

For best results, keep all important artwork within:
43.5 inches wide × 43 inches tall
This ensures your design remains fully visible after the sign is mounted in a post kit.

What is the visible area of the sign after it is installed?

Once installed with a post kit, the visible area of the sign is approximately:
45 inches wide × 44.5 inches tall
Areas outside this visible zone may be partially covered by post kit frames or hardware.

Can my design extend beyond the safe area?

Yes — background colors, patterns, or full-bleed graphics can extend beyond the safe area. However, logos, text, phone numbers, URLs, and key messaging should stay inside the safe area to avoid being hidden.

What happens if my artwork doesn‘t follow these guidelines?

No worries! Our design team reviews all submitted artwork. If anything important falls outside the recommended safe area, we’ll contact you and help adjust the layout so your sign look great once installed.

Can pictures be printed on the sign?

Yes. Print-ready images are $35 per sign. Images requiring scanning, setup, or map creation are $75 per sign (maximum $75). Double-sided signs only incur one charge.

Can I change information on a sign I already received?

Yes. We offer matching decals for general updates like phone numbers or auction date/time. Large decals covering several square feet can be difficult to apply and are not recommended.

What file formats do you accept for custom 4’×4’ signs?

We accept PNG, JPEG, PDF, EPS, TIF, or AI files.

What resolution does my artwork need to be?

We recommend 300 DPI for signs viewed from a distance. If you are not sure about your files resolution, our design team will review it and let you know if anything needs improvement—then help you make it print-sharp.

Sign Materials

What we print on, how long it lasts.

What are the signs made of and how long do they last?

10 mm - Approx. ½" thick rigid signboard. The signboard is a heavy gauge engineered corrugated plastic, with a two year outdoor life. It is a good replacement for plywood and is opaque.

4 mm - Approx. ¼" thick signboard, commonly called corrugated plastic. This material has a one year outdoor life.

What size signs do you offer?

Most common sizes are 4′×8′ and 4′×4′. We also offer smaller sizes and custom sizes. Larger billboard layouts can be made by combining multiple 4′×8′ panels.

Do you offer name riders?

Yes. Riders are available in 12"×43" and 6"×24" sizes with multiple installation options.

Post Kits & Installation

Post kits for 4‘×4‘ signs are designed for use with 10mm corrugated plastic only.

How do I install a Standard PVC Post Kit?

PVC Frame installation typically takes 30–45 minutes. The sign slides into horizontal tracks, which are secured to two vertical posts using the included hardware. The posts can be installed by digging 18"–24" deep holes or by using T-posts and a post pounder for hard or frozen ground.

  • Holds one single or double-sided sign. Installs in the ground.
  • Two 8' posts
  • Tracks for the sign to slide into
  • Flat caps + screws
How do I install an Arrow Post Kit?

Arrow Post Kits typically install in 30–45 minutes and are designed to display two single-sided signs in a V-shape for maximum visibility. The signs slide into horizontal tracks and are secured to three vertical posts (one center post and two side posts). Posts are installed by digging 18"–24" deep holes, using the sign as a spacing guide.

  • Holds two single-sided signs in a V-shape. Installs in the ground.
  • Three 8' vertical posts
  • Two sets of horizontal tracks
  • Flat caps + screws
Are there alternative cap styles or mounting options available?

Yes. Gothic caps are available as an elegant alternative to standard flat caps for all post kit options. You may also request holes (for 10mm signs) or brass-plated grommets (for 4mm signs) for hanging, or mount the sign directly to a wall by drilling through the corrugated plastic.

How do I install a Self-Standing Post Kit?

Self-Standing Post Kits typically install in 30–45 minutes and are designed for hard surfaces such as asphalt or concrete. The vertical posts attach to a flat base, the sign slides into horizontal tracks, and stabilizers with sandbags are used to add weight and keep the sign secure—no digging required.

  • Free-standing base for asphalt or cement.
  • Posts + horizontal tracks
  • Flat caps + screws
How do I install a Metal Post Kit?

Our patented Metal Post Kit installs in minutes with no tools required. Using the included PVC guide and sliding post method, the base posts are driven into the ground and the sign with top posts slides securely into place for a stable, professional installation.

  • Holds 1 single or double sided sign
  • 8‘ vertical posts
  • Signs must be pocketed
  • Installs in the ground
How do I set up my own wood or custom frame?

If you are using your own wood frame (not sold by 1-800-THE-SIGN), the sign can be mounted to a custom-built frame using standard lumber and fasteners. The frame is typically set in 18"–24" deep holes, and the sign is secured directly to the frame using nails or screws. This option is best for permanent or long-term installations.

Durability & Policies

Wind resistance and return policy details.

How do your signs hold up in the wind?

4′×4′ and 4′×8′ signs in our PVC post kit hold up to about 55 MPH winds. Smaller signs with skirt stands hold up to about 45 MPH winds.

Will my sign fade or wear over time?

Our signs are printed with UV-resistant inks designed to withstand direct sunlight and maintain vibrant color for at least two years. Each design is produced on high-quality vinyl and finished with a durable, pressure-sensitive laminate for long-lasting protection and secure adhesion.

Do you offer refunds or returns?

We do not accept returns on custom signs. Unused post kits and stands may be returned minus a 15% restocking fee. Return shipping is the customer’s responsibility (we can arrange return shipping upon request).

Sign Care

Built to handle weather, but easy care keeps it looking new. Our signs are built to endure the elements and last for years, but life happens! Birds might leave a mess, dogs might leave a mark, or a passing car might splash mud. If your sign gets dirty, here’s how to clean it and keep it looking like new while preserving the integrity of the print:

Cleaning Tips

  • General washing: Use warm, soapy water and a soft sponge (not a scrubby one). This is just like washing your car, and it‘ll prevent scratches..
  • Spot cleaning: Windex works well for quick cleanups.
  • Rinse: hose it down—corrugated plastic won’t rust.
  • Dry: air dry or gently wipe with a soft towel/paper towel.

What to Avoid

Avoid harsh cleaners (alcohol, bleach, strong chemicals). They can fade ink, damage vinyl, weaken adhesive, or affect the plastic. Skip products like Clorox, Scrubbing Bubbles, mildew removers, Comet, Soft Scrub, or Lysol.

Rule of thumb: If it‘s too harsh for your car, it’s too harsh for your sign.
